Sierra Leone
"A heavy downpour of rain inundated Freetown, as so often happens during the raining season. This one, however, was accompanied by a great calamity, as we found out in the early morning", our local partner reported to us.
The rains had liquefied a part of Sugar Loaf Mountain causing a powerful mudslide that caused an earthquake. The mudslide swept away buildings, killing hundreds of people. Most of Regent Community, which is adjacent to Sugar Loaf, had been covered by a mudslide and that thousands of people, who had been sleeping when the mudslide happened, were presumed dead.
Children’s Hope Fund provided emergency supplies and aid for the victims of the mudslide in Freetown in Sierra Leone.
